Tide Runners: Shrimping and Fishing on the Carolinas and Georgia Coast talk and book signing. “Noontime Notions” series at Transylvania County Library, 212 South Gaston Street, Brevard, NC. 12-1pm. Sponsored by friends of the Library. Free and open to the public. (Rescheduled from March 2020 due to pandemic). Mr. Barnwell will share stories about creating his latest book and the interesting characters he met while completing this 8-year project. Jewels of the Southern Coast: Architectural Gems of Charleston, Savannah and Beyond book signing at the Historic Charleston Foundation, 108 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC, on Friday, December 2, from 11am to 3pm. This beautifully produced coffee table book showcases the unique historic architecture and public spaces of Charleston and other coastal towns. The event is free and open to the public. Mr. Barnwell will present a PowerPoint presentation about his new book and talk about his experiences meeting the folks he photographed and interviewed over the eight-year span of the project. July 20, 2019. Saturday, 3-5pm. Book release event for Faces and Places of Cashiers Valley. Cashiers Historical Society sponsored event held at the Zachery-Tolbert House, Cashiers, NC. September, 2019. Tide Runners: Shrimping and Fishing on the Carolinas and Georgia Coast book release event. The meeting is held at the Cullowhee United Methodist Church at 416 Central Drive in Cullowhee on the Western Carolina University campus.

June 19, 2018. Tuesday, 12-1pm. "Faces of Appalachia" Lunchtime talk at Transylvania County Library in Brevard, NC. For the third year Mr. Barnwell will return to the library to present a talk. These popular events are part of the library's Bag Lunch Literary Talks. He will show images in a PowerPoint presentation, share stories about meeting the people he photographed and interviewed for his three Appalachian-themed books, The Face of Appalachia, On Earth's Furrowed Brow, and Hands in Harmony, and discuss what was involved in completing each of the book projects. July 19, 2018. 5:30pm. "Faces of Appalachia"  talk at McDowell County Library in Marion, NC. Mr. Barnwell will present a PowerPoint presentation and share stories about meeting the people he photographed and interviewed for his three Appalachian-themed books, The Face of Appalachia, On Earth's Furrowed Brow, and Hands in Harmony. and discuss what was involved in completing each of the book projects. August 15th, 2018. Wednesday, 3-5pm and 5:30-7pm. The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts in Highlands, NC. Mr. Barnwell will be at the giftshop at the Bascom from 3-5pm signing his books and then will present a talk to the Photography Club at the Bascom from 5:30-7pm. The presentation will center on his book, Great Smoky Mountains Vistas and he will also discuss his Faces and Places project of portraits done in Highlands and Cashiers, a sampling of which is currently on display at the upstairs gallery at the main building on campus.

August 16, 2018. Thursday, 6pm.  Mr. Barnwell will be speaking about his Great Smoky Mountains Vistas book at the Henderson County (NC) Library in Hendersonville, NC. October 19, 2018. Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center, Asheville, NC. Book signing for the new, 2nd edition of the best selling Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas book. 1-4pm. Free and open to the public. The 2nd edition has 16 new pages, more overlooks with identifications, article on waterfall hikes on the Parkway and more full-page “beauty” images.

Nov. 6 & 8, 2018. LIFE@WCU. Two separate talks on the FACES OF APPALACHIA. One on WCU campus in Cullowhee, NC, and the other at WCU/Biltmore Park campus in Asheville, NC. It houses a fantastic craft gallery and one of the best furniture galleries in the South. Also a great antique car museum (small fee) and craft studios to tour. Event is free and open to the public.

January 23rd, 2016. Saturday, 11:00 am. Mr.  Barnwell will give a talk at the Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville, GA as part of the "Ansel Adams: Before and After" exhibit. The one hour seminar, with fellow photographer Jay Dusard from Arizona, will cover how each photographs indigenous people: Mr. Barnwell about Appalachian subjects and Mr. Dusard about his work with cowboys of the west. The museum is the largest devoted to western art in the country. Details on the Adams exhibit, which includes two images by Mr. Barnwell, and the various day-long series of seminars can be found on the museums website.

June 10-11, 2016. Book signings at Craggy Gardens Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Saturday, June 11 from 1-4pm and on Sunday, June 12 at the main Visitor Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville from 10am-1pm. Mr. Barnwell will speak on the Blue Ridge Parkway and his book, Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas as well as his Appalachian series of documentary work from his books The Face of Appalachia, On Earth's Furrowed Brow, and Hands in Harmony. Transylvania County Parks and Recreation Center from 7-9 pm.

August 23, 2016. Tuesday 4-5pm. Mr. Barnwell will present his talk on the Blue Ridge Parkway and his Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas book at the Fontana Regional Library at 249 Frank Allen Rd. in Cashiers, NC. It is a free talk and open to the public. He will discuss the history of the Parkway, its route through Virginia and North Carolina, attractions worth visiting, favorite overlooks, and how he completed the mountain peak identifications (including one of Cashiers Valley) used in the book. The new, Great Smoky Mountains Vistas book will be explored briefly as well.

August 25, 2016. Mr. Barnwell will be a guest on the WUNC radio program "The State of Things" on Thursday, August 25th. The program will be about the 100th Anniversary of the National Park System. It will be broadcast in western North Carolina on WCQS-FM from 12 noon-1pm, then available as a podcast. Mr. Barnwell will talk about his photography background, Appalachian-themed work, and two Vistas books related to the national parks.

October 4-7, 2016. Wild Acres Retreat Photo Workshop. Mr. Barnwell will be a guest instructor for a workshop to be held at Wildacres Retreat in Little Switzerland near the Blue Ridge Parkway from October 4-7th. Visit their website for details and to register with Kelly Culpepper, photographer and workshop coordinator for Carolina Captured 12. This is an annual event held at a great event space.

aSHEville Museum, 35 Wall St. Asheville, NC. "The Women of Appalachia" photographic exhibit. Twelve images from The Face of Appalachia, On Earth's Furrowed Brow, and Hands in Harmony books with oral history interview text panels. Shown are farm, music, and craft-themed images with women as the focus.  Show has ended.

January-May, 2015. Mountain Heritage Center, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC. Hands in Harmony: Traditional Music and Crafts in Appalachia photographic exhibit. Thirty images with accompanying oral history text panels. Check with Mountain Heritage Center for hours. This will be their final exhibit in this facility before a two-year remodeling project begins. Talk and book signing will be scheduled in April.

Newark Museum of Art, Newark, NJ. “Seeing Beyond the Moment: The Photographic Legacy and Gifts of George Tice.” Two prints exhibited (Tice gifts of Barnwell prints to museum). Attended opening reception, September 17th. Also attended opening of Tice show at Nailya Alexander Gallery in Manhattan September 18th. Both events part of his 75th birthday series of exhibits around the country.  Barnwell image, “Collie Payne & Berry in tobacco field,” used in New York Times and numerous regional newspaper articles about exhibit.
